The Solvay business school in Vietnam
Historical context
While visiting Belgium in 1994, Minister of National Education of Vietnam showed a high interest in post-graduate programs organized by the Solvay Business School.
The same year, professor J. Nagels flew to Vietnam on the impulse of the French-speaking community of Belgium (CGRI and APEFE) to see the opportunities of partnership. Being there, he signed a convention between the Solvay Business School (ULB) and the Open University of Ho Chi Minh city to set up a Master Program in General Management. In January 1995, the first program was launched. In January 1996, another agreement was signed between Solvay Business School, ULB and the Postgraduate Faculty, National Economics University (NEU) to establish a Master Program in General Management. Cooperation between ULB and NEU was extended with the establishment of two other cooperative programs: Public Economics and Management and Enterprise Management and Information systems in 1999 and 2000 respectively.
Objective
These programs are part of a larger long run cooperation view, in partnership with local universities.
It is an opportunity for Vietnamese participants to obtain an international standard level of graduate education in Vietnam at a reasonable cost. The ultimate goal of these programs is to provide students with in-depth and state-of-the-art knowledge on today's business management. The expertise of skilful teachers, the subject contents and the participative way of teaching are delivered to insure a tightly integration between theory and practice, making students right away operational.
Main programs’ characteristics
The two years master programs are aimed at cadres in public, private or joint-ventures companies selected among many Vietnamese applicants. Admission is limited to students graduated from a university, having at least 2 years of work experience, English proficiency and passing the interview with the ULB - local partner Management Board.
About fifteen Belgian teachers coming from the Solvay Business School of ULB but also from other French-speaking universities of Belgium will make the journey to Vietnam for each of our programs. Courses are usually held during ten days, 3 hours a day.
Languages of the programs are French and English, except for matters taught by Vietnamese professors such as Political Economics and Philosophy. Students can choose either French or English to write and defend their final thesis. Selected professors and members of the ULB and the local partner will attend and mark the students' final thesis defend.
Upon completion of the course requirements, students will be granted a Master degree by the Rector and Professors Committee of the ULB.
