B1/ Technology and Telecom Forecasts (30 hours)

Coordinator: Gunnar Mortier

2 sessions TCP/IP (content required for CISSP)
> 3 sessions IT fundamentals
> 3 sessions ISO standards (27001 27002 mostly)
> 2 sessions ISF (one on the standard, one on risk: possibly IRAM/SPRINT/SARA)

The goal of B1 is to provide primers in some of the subject matter that will
be tackled in the remainder of the security and audit years. To this end
various topics related to networks, telecom and IST basics will be taught.
The first four sessions tackle TCP/IP, the internet networking protocol in
depth. This should provide a sound basis for any questions on this subject
in the CISSP tests.

Next, there is a general intro to IST addressing the elements an IST
infrastructure is made up of as well as most of the considerations linked to
the management of an IST infrastructure

One module will given in sync with the B2 module in order to give some
practical background and insights into network perimeter architectures. This
module will be a firewall workshop during which participants will be given
the opportunity to do some firewall testing and get some live experience
with firewalls.

Two modules will go into more recent developments in telecom. This concerns
GSM and other wireless types of networks (in the various generations) and
the different forms of data transmission through these networks. It also
includes an overview of VOIP technology, increasingly popular and frequently
problematic.

At the end of the module, two possible options are foreseen. One of them is
the option to go into some more detail into the world of hacking,
alternatively as it not tackled in any of the other modules, it may be
possible to look into one of the ISF standard of good practice. The choice
between the two will be discussed with the participants.
