DULBEA

The ULB Department of Applied Economics (DULBEA) was founded by Etienne Sadi Kirschen in 1958. His vocation was research in applied economics, based on the new developments taking place in economics and the theory of econometrics. The DULBEA also gives prominence to recommendations in the field of economic policy. All members of the DULBEA are academic members of the Faculty of Economics, Social and Political Science of the ULB and of the Institute of Labour research.

ECARES

The “European Centre for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics” (ECARES), founded in 1991, began as a joint political initiative of the ULB Institute of European Studies and the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR), a network of some 500 researchers in Europe. The ECARES mission is to develop high quality economic research with a special emphasis on Western and Central Europe and to provide a meeting place for lecturers, professional economists and those working for the European Commission.

IRIDIA

The Institute for Interdisciplinary Research and Development in Artificial Intelligence (IRIDIA) is the research and artificial intelligence laboratory of the ULB. The IRIDIA’s principal fields of competence lie in cognitive representation, artificial intelligence techniques for the control of processes and classification, heuristics inspired by nature for use in combinatorial solutions and problems of optimisation in continuous spaces. Professor Hugues Bersini, the leading IT Professor at Solvay, is the Director of the IRIDIA.

The Institute of Sociology

The Institute of Sociology occupies an important place in social research, as much in the domain of fundamental as applied research, including in the fields of sociology, anthropology, social philosophy and social law. It comprises twenty research centres and six research groups. Some 48 academic researchers and 45 contract researchers work in the various teams. The Centres of Sociology of Labour, Sociology of Organisations and Sociology of Statistics have links with the Solvay School of Business through some of their professors and lecturers.

GRISH

The IT and Social Sciences Research Group is a multidisciplinary research group that focuses on research into information system strategies and the analysis of socio-organisational phenomena that accompany the process of computerisation. The main activities of the Group deal with the management of computer networks in private and public organisations, risk factors associated with IT, systems evaluation from the point of view of the end user and, more generally, organisational aspects of information technology.
