Programme
content : The Degree in Advanced
Studies (DEA), a preliminary to taking
a Doctorate in Management Sciences,
comprises two distinct parts: the
first, a taught course designed to
bring students to the same level,
and the second consisting of research
seminars.
The taught section
includes 10 courses designed to provide
students from different backgrounds
with the same theoretical knowledge.
Thus, some students may benefit from
a slightly lighter programme, whilst
others will face an intensive preparatory
year of lectures and exams. In the
case of the latter, the grade of distinction
(an average of 14/20) is required
in order to be admitted to the doctorial
programme.
The first part of
this course comprises:
• Corporate economics seminars
(45 hours) • Lectures
in the following subjects:
- International finance and international
trade finance (30 hours)
- Services marketing or international
marketing (30 hours)
- Strategy (30 hours)
- Fiscal law II (30 hours)
- Social company management
and exercises (30 + 30hours)
- Financial theory (30
hours)
- Monetary theory II
(30 hours)
- English level 4
(60 hours)
When necessary, and
in function of the research direction
or initial background of the candidate,
additional lectures may be imposed
by the DEA College or its Office.
The seminar programme
includes three advanced seminar courses
that must be taken by all students.
This second part should be considered
as the preparatory phase for a doctoral
thesis.
The seminars are
as follows: . Seminars
in management sciences (30 + 165 hours).
These are “active” seminars,
each requiring the preparation of
a project by one of the students and
the project discussion led by another,
with the seminar being followed by
a lecturer and an assistant.
• Seminars in economic analysis
(30 + 165 hours):
speakers from
other universities are invited
to give an
hour-long lecture, followed by
questions and discussion. These
are supervised
by a lecturer and organised by
the Solvay Business School in collaboration
with the Emile Bernheim Centre
and
the ULB Department of Applied Economics.
Students are also required to attend
lectures and other management science
research activities organised at
the
ULB.
• Research Seminars in Applied
Economics and Management (45 hours) The programme is
open to two types of candidates:
1. Those who hold
a minimum of a distinction in one
of the following degrees from the
ULB: Management Engineer, Postgraduate Management Programme,
DEC2 in Management Sciences (the former
preparation for a doctorate), MBA
or Master’s in Management (Vietnam).
Entrants with these qualifications
are dispensed from taking the first
part of the DEA.
2. Those who have obtained other graduate
or master’s degrees, subject
to approval by the SBS. The jury will
decide the programme to be followed
by each of these candidates.
Some 35 students,
representing 13 different nationalities
are currently engaged in the doctoral
programme.
