  The SBS Doctoral Programme PRINT THIS PAGE

Programme_doctoral The SBS Doctoral Programme in Management Sciences is made of two parts: the siteEDTGestion doctoral training and the preparation and presentation of a doctoral thesis in economics and management.
The doctoral training falls within the framework of the Doctoral School in Management Sciences, set up jointly by ULB (Solvay Business School), ULg (HEC – Management School) and UMH (Warocqué Faculty).

The ULB-ULg-UMH Doctoral School in Management Sciences

Objectives:

The Doctoral School sets out to offer young researchers:

  • an attractive and convivial scientific environment;
  • an international window on the world, both from the point of view of research and teaching and of the network of institutions involved;
  • an overall command of management sciences relating to epistemological questions, to the main theories and methods in use, and to the research teams in the field; in-depth knowledge of some areas of research.

Programme:

The doctoral training (1 to 2 years maximum) begins with a common component (35 ECTS) designed to ensure that there is a common basis of knowledge, to encourage exchanges within the group and the comparison of models and methods.

This is followed by advanced lectures (10 ECTS) which offer students specific programmes in each of the six main areas of management, designed to enhance their knowledge in their chosen area of specialization: international trade and development; finance and accounting; information systems, supply chain management and quantitative management methods; marketing and strategy; human resources and organisation; innovation and entrepreneurship.

Finally, thematic workshops (15 ECTS) are organized in each of the six fields. These workshops enable students to perfect their knowledge and tailor their training to their own individual needs. In this framework, students actively participate in conferences, seminars, doctoral courses and summer schools.

You can find all the relevant information on doctoral training in Management Sciences and also the complete programme on the Doctoral School website: http://www.edtgestion.be/

The doctoral thesis

After completing the doctoral training (or during this phase), students can register for the Doctorate in Economics and Management Sciences and start work on their thesis. This phase is without any specific time limit and may take from 2 to 6 years, according to the candidate’s status. Some students work as research assistants, while others benefit from scholarships or grants, or self-finance their doctoral studies.

The thesis defences

Doctoral theses may be written and presented in French or English.

The supervisor (or at least one of the two co-supervisors) must be a member of the Solvay Business School Faculty and holder of a PhD.

Co-supervision with other Belgian or foreign universities is also possible, providing that a co-supervision contract has been signed beforehand (co-supervision agreement).

When the thesis is near completion, the doctoral student must address a request for aggregation of the subject of his/her thesis and the composition of the thesis Jury to the President of the Solvay Business School, with a copy to the Director of the Doctoral programme and to his/her thesis supervisor (or co-supervisors). This request must be accompanied by a succinct, 1 to 2 paragraph summary of the thesis.

The President will then include this point on the agenda of the next meeting of the SBS Jury, during which the Thesis Jury will be constituted, on the basis of recommendations from the thesis supervisor (or co-supervisors).

A private and a public viva are held, in accordance with the conditions set out in the Faculty rules (the rules currently in force are those dated 9 December 2004).

Prior to the private defence, the doctoral student must present paper copies of his/her thesis for the members of the Jury and for the ULB libraries. The student will be given a password in order to encode the thesis on the Bictel/e interface. The doctoral student must encode the thesis prior to the public defence. The encoded thesis must be identical to the one submitted to members of the Jury prior to the public viva and must contain those modifications demanded during the private viva.

Following the public defence, the Jury Secretary coordinates the production of the thesis report in accordance with the existing SBS template (viva report template).
