The Solvay Business School (SBS)
is composed of more than 100 academics
and practitioners teaching at the
Université
Libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Solvay
Doctoral School in Management
welcomes more than 80 researchers
enrolled in our Ph.D. Program.
The year 2003 was the 100th anniversary
of the Solvay Business School, founded
by Ernest Solvay, a scientist and
an entrepreneur who recognized the
importance of an effective relationship
between universities and the business
world. The Solvay Business School,
through its educational vocation and
its research impulse, aims at fostering
this entrepreneurial spirit.
The Centre
Emile Bernheim (CEB), funded
by the Bernheim
Foundation, hosts research activities
which are specific to a business school,
including finance, strategy, marketing,
accounting, innovation, international economy, historical finance, quantitative methods in management. It has
recently experienced a huge development.
In collaboration with the Doctoral
School in Management Sciences,
the CEB has recently initiated several
international partnerships through
formal and informal research agreements.
Located in Brussels and affiliated
to a renowned university, the SBS
holds a strategic position in Europe.
Its international programme includes
worldwide exchange opportunities for
students and faculty and the organization
of international conferences. Visiting
professors from abroad are regularly
invited. Foreign faculty also present
research output either at the international
conferences organized by the SBS,
or at our research
seminar in applied economics and management,
jointly organized with the Department
of Applied Economics (DULBEA)
The SBS faculty members publish in
top academic and professional journals.
They are frequently solicited as experts
by national and international institutions
(UE, OECD, World Bank, etc.) and private
firms. They also benefit from funds
dedicated to fundamental research
and doctoral formation.
A key strength of the SBS is that
it is part of ULB. Many SBS faculty
members also teach and develop research
activities in several departments
and colleges. Our research process
has therefore the advantage of being
fully integrated. It is horizontally
integrated in the sense that it is
at the crossroads of many scientific
disciplines. They cover the whole
environment of private and public
firms: from advanced finance to economics,
from mathematics to strategy, from
organizational behavior to artificial
intelligence. It is also vertically
integrated, from practical expertise
to scientific investigation, at the
junction of empirical experience and
theoretical analysis.
