PhD Programme in Management
The Doctoral Programme in Management Sciences is made up of two parts: doctoral
training and the preparation and presentation of a ULB doctoral thesis in Economics and
Management. The doctoral training falls within the framework of the Doctoral School in
Management Sciences (DSMS), set up jointly by three Belgian universities: ULB (SBS), Université
de Liège (HEC – Ecole de Gestion) and Université de Mons-Hainaut (Warocqué Faculty). The
DSMS also benefits from European partnerships with the Universities of Maastricht (The
Netherlands), Paris I-Panthéon-Sorbonne and Strasbourg (France).
The doctoral training lasts one or two years, whereas the dissertation phase lasts from two
to six years.

PhD Programme in Economics
The SBS-EM offers two tracks for the completion of a Ph.D. Each track
is anchored in a research centre: there is the DULBEA Doctoral School and the ECARES Doctoral
School. Coursework for the DULBEA Doctoral School is based on one of the research masters
with automatic acceptance after the completion of the Bachelor in Economics. Coursework for the
ECARES Doctoral School is mostly taught in a research master in English.
The ECARES Doctoral School offers internationally competitive, high quality PhD
programmes in "Economics and Statistics" and in "Quantitative Economics". During the first year
the students follow courses in macroeconomics, microeconomics, econometrics, and statistics. In
the second year students do field courses and write a first scientific paper. Depending on the
performance during the first two years, students are allowed to the doctoral training and thesiswriting
phase of the PhD programmes.
