Executive Master in Finance

What is it?

The Executive Master in Finance is a programme specialized in finance combining tools, techniques and professional judgment in cutting-edge topics. Our mission is to make sure you will never examine a financial decision without a sustained argument and a critical eye, based on a strong financial literacy.

Designed for practitioners with a harmonious time schedule, it provides a hybrid pedagogy associating practical cases and experience. This approach fosters interactions between the various participants’ backgrounds, while satisfying different motivations: sharpen your skills in finance or add a new dimension to a current background more and more in touch with financial topics.

Programme Structure

From October to June, the EMF delivers a content seperated in (a) a prepatory module in Quantitative Analysis, (b) six (6) building blocks in the various disciplines of finance and (c) an additional 4-day course in Financial Modelling in Excel.

The knowledge brought in class by the professors is completed by specific readings, articles, presentations, simulatoon games and excel application files.

Course Contents

Module 0 - Quantitative Analysis

The objective of this preliminary optional module is to provide an excursion through the essence of some fundamental concepts of statistics and probability.

  • Descriptive statistics (univariate and multivariate)

  • Probability distributions (Gaussian, Poisson, exponential, ...), models and Monte Carlo simulations

  • Statistical decision rules (estimation and inference about the mean,...)

All concepts are illustrated by short exercises.

Module 1 - Foundations of Finance and Corporate finance

This module is the starting point and cornerstone of the EMF programme. It brings the key foundations of finance, the valuation principles and scheme in general, the understanding of the requirement of return given a level of risk, the valuation of the various asset classes, projects and firms. It also brings the latest developments in Corporate Finance and the funding of firms in general.

Module 2 - Financial Reporting and Analysis

The financial motivation, philosophy and structure being clearer after the first module, it is important to realise that there will be no accurate valuation without good data quality and understanding. Therefore, the present module aims at understanding and analyzing published financial statements. By the end of the module, participants will be able to use financial statements as a basis for financial decision making, and to understand their limitations and potential misstatements.

Module 3 - Investments

This course aims at providing a sound knowledge of the fundamentals of modern portfolio theory, asset allocation theory and portfolio construction techniques. At the end of the module, participants are expected to understand the main strategies, active and passive portfolio management and portfolio measurement, and to discuss real-world examples. Special cutting-edge products and applications will be also covered and their implication in modern financial management uncovered: hedge funds, funds of funds, structured products.

Module 4 - Derivatives

This module presents a deeper understanding of financial derivatives, with particular emphasis on their valuation via the arbitrage method and their uses within financial markets and companies.

Module 5 - Risk Management

Relying on the knowledge acquired in previous modules, this “umbrella” course addresses the main topics related to Financial Risk Management (market, credit, model and liquidity risks), Operational Risk Management and Economic Capital. Financial market risks identification, valuation and management are covered in detail.

Module 6 - Asset & Liability Management

The aim of the Asset and Liability Management course is to provide focused, theoretical and practical training in all the key methodologies employed in this important discipline. Covering all major approaches to the measurement and management of interest rate risk and hedging techniques, modules will be supported by team based, advanced computer simulation exercises. The course is split into two equal parts with the first (second) part covering the theory (practice).

Special Module - Financial Modelling in Excel

Recently fully integrated in the EMF curriculum, this module is organised into 2 distinctive parts, the first one taking place in parallel with the Corporate Finance course, the second one right after the Investments and the Derivatives modules.
The first weekend covers valuation modeling in Excel (building pro forma models, cost of capital calculations...), while the second focuses on portfolio and options computations (portfolio optimization, Monte Carlo simulations, Black-Scholes option pricing..).
