The European Microfinance Programme (EMP) seeks to train current and future microfinance professionals from both the North and the South through a multidisciplinary approach. It aims to analyse, and in turn rationalise, the different perspectives on development issues in the microfinance sector. Students will learn the latest techniques used in developing countries by entrepreneurs in the field of microentreprise management. The programme will provide a solid theoretical base as well as practical knowledge, linked to the daily realities of microenterprise in the developing world.
The microfinance sector is developing at a rapid pace creating a growing demand for experienced professionals within microfinance and credit institutions, banks and development investment funds in Europe and abroad. The EMP will create a pool of highly qualified microfinance professionals who will ensure the future development of microfinance institutions worldwide in accordance with to the highest international standards.
The idea of developing a European programme in microfinance was conceived at the conference of Muhammad Yunus on the future of Microfinance in February 2004. This meeting was coordinated by the Solvay Business School of the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and PlaNet Finance Belgium.
The EMP represents a groundbreaking initiative which will provide a specialized microfinance curriculum, delivered by internationally renown academics and practitioners, to students from both developed and developing countries. This project responds to a growing demand for training in development activities, particularly in microfinance. The current growth in the microfinance sector attracts an increasing number of students and professionals who are aware of the career opportunities this presents.
